Refinishing furniture with Chalk Paint for First timers

There are a million Chalk Paint How to's on the interwebz, but I finally decided take a stab at it myself. I learn best by doing, so there was only so much I could read before I actually bit the bullet myself. My motivation? We have a few small furniture pieces we need on the 1st and 2nd floor, and I'm all about finding them on craigslist and refinishing. On Saturday night we stayed in, and I was completely determined to finish an old night stand that we are now using as a lamp stand on the 1st floor.

Now, Annie Sloan paint isn't cheap, it runs at $39 smackaroos a can - which is supposed to cover two large furniture pieces - and if you wanna cover it with wax, that is another $30 bucks a can. Overall, it gives furniture a great shabby chic look, so I think it's very much worth it.  Especially when you compare it to buying NEW furniture. I mean geesh, we all know that can annihilate any bank account.

So, as I know very little about this paint - I called up my sis-in-law Sara, and she gave me the skinny. She's the expert chalk painter in the fam, and here is what I learned.

First find it - Annie Sloan Paint isn't sold everywhere. Go to their website and find out who sells it. I bought my two cans at Michella's in Old Town Spring. What I liked about this place was the samples they had. Sounds weird, but keep reading.

Wax on / Wax off - Every chalk paint color can be fininished with clear wax, dark wax, or a combination of both. Or you can forgo wax all together - to really get the chalk look. Your waxing decision will make a big difference in the final look of your piece. These sample boards below really helped me decide:

Now for materials - I've got all the usual suspects below. But most importantly - the dish rag and water (not pictured here) are the most important. And as soon as you open up a can an door into your paint container - seal that sucker right back up immediately. Exposure to air changes the consistency - which you don't want to happen to unused paint.

Before we get started - here's my little night stand turned lamp table before - pretty ugly - I know. I liked this piece because it was small, and I figured would serve as good practice. I recommend everyone start out small, because even this small piece took me about eight hours (four on Saturday, 4 on Sunday).

Now, I've sanded this piece, which isn't always necessary with chalk paint. But since this piece was dark, and my paint was light - I knew it was required. I also think any piece looks better if sanded. Obviously it is up to you. I have also heard about liquid sand paper to save time, but I didn't have any and will try that on my next project.

Then I started painting. This was after the first coat. What's most important is I dipped my brush in water occasionally, then wiped off excess on the rag to help the paint go further. Some people dilute the paint outright, but I heard this brush in the water trick is easier from Sara.

Here is the rag and water bucket toward the end of the project

On Sunday I was finally finished. I'd say I put three coats everywhere. Places that weren't sanded well probably had four coats. Excuse my old, ugly hardware.
I plan to get something new in the future.

this color is Arles - and has no wax finish

And that was my first go at chalk-paint furniture painting! I wish I was looking forward to repainting the six chairs in my dinning room.

But I am not. (So much left to do in this room!!)

Over and out!! -Tessy.

Unfinished Projects

Happy Tuesday! Hi to all the new faces around these parts!  If you’re like me your significant other had the day off, which left you very confused on Monday morning. I kept thinking, when is he going to wake up? Should I wake him? Then it dawned on me, its President’s day. No complaints here, I got a sweet lunch date out of it. Curbside service to one of our fave downtown diners. Anywho. I did something this weekend that I Loathe. Finish projects. I love to start projects, dream up what I am going for, search blogs and pinterest. THINK about what I am going to do some more (Yes, I am a muller, but details make all the difference IMHO).
Then I run out in a mad dash…..kind of like a manic person.. to buy all my supplies ( I generally forget the most basic items… and have to go back). But this weekend, I got down to it. We finally painted the foyer, After months of thinking about a green or a blue or a gray color, and a swing and miss at home depot, I found the perfect color.
Why is it perfect? Because it looks blue gray during the day, and seafoam-green-gray at night. HA! The best of both worlds for an indecisive person like me. Seriously tho, I might continue on with this color in our master bedroom, the office, and we already decided to finish up to the 2ndfloor beyond the foyer. Pictures to come, there just hasn’t been any sunlight (Boo on you rain).

We tackled those cornice boards, I bought the fabric and batting a month ago.

And finally painted a copper mirror that just was not jiving in our living room.
Heres the general direction of our dining room... still a lot to left but I am finally feeling like its coming together ...

And no pictures because I simply forgot, but we finally touched up and finished the built-in shelves. We painted the back of the shelves a very dark (shocker) navy blue. If I could make my whole house navy blue… I probably would.

Now all these house projects have been spurned by our inaugural book club meeting, kicking off this Thursday. We are reading No Easy Day, the story about capturing Osama Bin Laden, and I’m only on page 70 of the book. EEEEK. It's really good so far, I flew through it last night. Be back soon, anddd (groan) I owe you a Yeast-free diet check in!

Friday Faves - Furniture Edition

Happy Friday Y'all. First up on my Friday faves: going home to see my boo!

This work trip has been so cool, but I'm so excited to takkeee it to the houuuse!
Hello two-hour flight I want to be on you.

After wrapping things up here, I will be headed to the house manana.

So speaking of the House - we have actually been decisive in buying our first furniture :) And decisiveness is pretty much impossible in our household, so I am super duper thrilled that this bad boy {but in gray} is finally arriving tomorrow!!
[The Beckham Sectional from Basset]
Obviously this picture is not of my house, #Iwish. The couch was supposed to arrive last Saturday, but we got the  ol' delivery man fake-out. But Alas, our couch is finally coming!
As my bestie Lynette says "you come home to sit" tee heeee. Bye, bye,bye to those ugly black couches!
What we loved about this piece is its modular, so we can shape it however we want. This is pretty helpful because our room is an awkward size, and we were having so muchhhh trouble finding a couch.
#Progress folks!

And third, I've purchased my first and probably only Christmas present.
Best.Present.Ever. This table. my gosh. I just want to marry it :)

{The Emmerson from West Elm}
I compromised on the couch, but that table was all mine. #soinlove.
Its all finally coming together, and thank goodness because an empty white house was
really testin' my patience!!Just need chairs, rugs and drapes! #thatsalmosteverything  LOL

annddd up fourth on this wonderful Friday?  We are kicking off the holiday season with some friends for their Thanksgiving gala. And hopefully buying a Christmas tree. I want a fake, and Matt wants real.. so we shall see who prevails on this one!  Muhahahaha.

This post was all kinds of inspired by Amber with her contagious Christmas spirit, go check out her wreaths!
Who else is getting their decorating  on this weekend?

Welcome to our Home!

Helloooo Dearss! By the time this post publishes I'll be getting my hair did, most likely ombre on my tips or full on black.. but you never know...
EEEP. I'm already scared of the thought.

So I wanted to share a few more pictures of the house, since I started the House pics yesterday, with my kitchen! And as usual I am late, we actually closed on the house a month ago. But I am late mostly because I wanted to make collages (story of my life).
But alas there is no quick collage maker per the demise of that ill-fated google website that used to make collages which I can't even remember what it-was-called-right-now.
Wow, pathetic. But really, some before and after collages would be ideal.

Ok moving right a long, collageless... here are some before and after shots.. Welcome to our humble abode!

To our current look:

[from the street]
[driveway, hiii neighbors you're on a blog :) Just a tiny one tho, fret not!]
[the red door that I picked on accident. I never intended to have such a red door]
There she is!
Our blue house, on the corner, that we picked every door knob and paint color in..and still in need of blinds/shades/drapes or whatever we pick out (hopefully this weekend). I have more pictures of my kitchen, including some cool details that weren't captured in my post yesterday. But I shall return with them soon.

Things we hope to do:
  • add something to the windows. Shutters, crown molding, flower baskets, just something to give it dimension and make it less boxy looking. (very long-term project)
  • add vines and plants along the iron fence. We have the vine, just need to plant it! and we should buy the flowers soon.
Whatcha thank?? I will be hosting my first-ever giveway tomorrow, make sure to stop back by!!

Oh and happy halloween. DUH. Xoxoxox

Happy, Happy Joy Joy

Hola Mi Amigas, It's Friday and I am such a fabulous mood! I'm posting  my Friday Faves, even tho I just realized that Friday Faves might not be going going down since BB is in a car somewhere headed west today. I had written the post, so I'll just post it anyway!
Numero Uno on my faves list... My future Kitchen has got me swooning!

I wanted a very white and contemporary kitchen, and its the only place in the house that in my imaginary mind of a perfect house, I don't think I made any error. if You dont like white kitchens, obviously we have differing opinions. I wanted to show you a picture of it complete, but I am so darn excited I had to post. I think I’ve dropped my perfectionism too J  I have accepted that there are other parts of the house that might need a tweak or two, but thats okay! AND I have limited myself to how many times I visit the house, and have generally woosah'ed about the stress. Bring on closing!

Item number two... Once a week starting next week we'll be seeing my girl Brit Brit on the Tube. Girl hasn't been on tv since I was a teen. And NO, crying interviews do not count. I'm freaking stoked!!! And she has a new song coming out soon. Double ya!

Number three.. I'll be shopping all day with mama for decor related house things tomorrow!
shop tils we DROP - My favorite thing to do! and Matt will be out in Galveston fishin' his little life away so it will be interuption free. I tried this last weekend with him in tow, and yea we just ended up eating Mexi food and heading home after about 1 hour. Yea. That's how he rolls.

I am helping host a baby shower for this girl on Sunday. I get to see all my girls, and shower this mom-to-be with presents! We are all so excited for Baby Boy Garcia!

And finally, next week I will be on my old stomping grounds, Austin, TX for almost a whole week for a work training. But of course I'll be hanging out with my little little munchkins and My bff after hours.

Clearly all the exclamation points mean I have had  too much caffeine, but I'll take it! I am ready to get my girl time weekend on! Happy Friday Peeps.

Trying for a White Houzz

Holy moly I haven't blogged since Tuesday. Where have I been?? I can hardly remember what I have been doing, but I can tell you what has been on my mind.  Interior paint color! I have been wanting a very 'fresh' white house, but seriously lacking the cahones to really go for it.

Then BOOM. I ran into this picture on houzz.com (my latest obession).

via
Amazing right? so of course I rushed over to this amazing blog written by Maria, called Dreamy Whites. It's  all about her obsession with painting everything white. And furnishing everything in white. Ding ding ding. Talk about finding my soulmate y'all!

I scoured Maria's blog, and her take on dreamy whites  all saturday morning. She mixes a variety of light grays and shades of white to give her house the ultimate fresh look. I am not interior decorator, and this is pretty much my first rodeo in the house department, but  this woman is a genius. I totally had a blog moment where I thanked the lord about a dozen times for turning me onto blogging. Then  I thought.. hmm it's basically enabled me to obsess over things that should be simple. But that is not the point.

So off I went to buy paint samples, when mind you my builder already put 4 paint samples up for me to view. I picked up a few of Maria's top whites, and then a few I thought I might like. Here is what they looked like:

From left to right - SW Alabaster, RL Country Dairy, SW Greek Villa and BM White Dove
Time to take the plunge! And honestly I have no idea. Maybe I'll just flip a coin

Calling all paint afficianados out there, any opinion on these colors?

Paint and wood floor stain selections are due tomorrow, wish us luck!.ahh. 3-4 more weeks and this process will be done!!

A Sneak Peek into our future home :)

The weekend came and went, but today I want to chat about what is currently taking up all my time and energy. Our future house!

I just HAVE to tell you how excited I finally am. If you are new round' here, Matthew and I are in the process of building a town home in the city. I'm just now getting excited because I get mega stressed with big changes. I'm so critical and put a ton of pressure on myself to do everything right. Then I criticize myself for being so critical. have I confused you already?

Well settling into married life and the preparing for our first home has been no different. I don't know why, but stress is just one of my biggest faults. I wish I could control it, but unfortunately I can not. I can only learn how to drink heavily better manage it, which I think I have accomplished somewhat in the past couple of months.

I have been hiding all this crazy talk above from everyone but Matthew. I mean, I can't vent about wedding stress for seven months straight, then immediately go into house stress!! I think my friends, blog and IRL, would disown me. Shoot I would disown me. Matthew told me to take a chill pill and enjoy the ride, and I'm have started to do just that. This requires telling my worrywart brain to turn OFF.

So off with my head! and onto drooling over my favorite window:

(We just got sheet rock, which makes your house look 3 x bigger inside)
And our imaginary white kitchen:

I'm just so in love! Our bank accounts will be empty but we'll have our first home! Just remember husband, happy wife=happy life!

Technically, it won't be our house until August 31, our estimated closing date. Until then, I am still claiming property virgin! This Saturday we will FINALLY get to make our selections, and I'm freaking so excited!! We literally have 100 more decisions to make, and I can't wait!

I apologize in advance if my blog starts to look like a Home Depot ad. Who knew home depot could be so much fun??? Don't worry - I still love nail polish the most.

Love ya'll,
